St John's College Exchange Migration

Summer 2007

St John's College, Cambridge approached us to assist them with the migration of their Exchange server from version 5.5 to 2003. This was a particularly complicated area of a staged migration of their current NT4 infrastructure to Server 2003 and required knowledge beyond that available in-house.

St John's College have recently been moving from the deprecated Windows NT 4 platform to Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Active Directory.

Part of this project was the move of their email services from Microsoft Exchange 5.5 to the Active Directory-integrated Exchange 2003. In order to avoid downtime the IT department built a new server to run in parallel with the old system, allowing them to move mailboxes across department-by-department with no fixed timescale.

Unfortunately setting up and managing this level of interoperability is not an easy task and so ctm were brought in to provide additional technical resource for the migration. We built the new server and prepared it for use alongside the existing system, then handed back the migration of mailboxes and decommissioning of the old server to the onsite IT staff.

  • Working cooperatively with onsite staff
  • Best practice procedures implemented to safeguard data
  • Working within our client's existing project constraints of minimal e-mail downtime and zero network downtime
  • Full handover to in-house staff on completion of the work
